...The CDU/CSU, which was forced out of power for the first time in 1969 by a coalition between the Social Democrats and the Liberal Democrats, became the ruling party again in October 1982 with the formation of a government led by Helmut Kohl (1930-), leader of the CDU. Influenced by the prewar Bavarian People's Party, the CSU integrated various conservative trends and established a firm foothold in Bavaria under party leader Franz Josef Strauss (1915-1988) (since 1961, and Theodor Waigel since 1988), and has maintained an absolute majority since 1970.
