Located in northern Mongolia, it is the country's third largest city. It is located 188 km north-northwest of the capital, Ulaanbaatar. It has a population of 65,791 (2000). Since 1961, it has been built adjacent to the village of the same name as a new industrial base with assistance from COMECON (Community Economic Cooperation) countries. Currently, it is one of Mongolia's leading industrial cities, along with Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet (home to a copper-molybdenum complex). There is a railway line connecting Mongolia with the Russian Federation, and it is also connected by railway to the Sharyngool coalfield in the east and Erdenet in the west.
