Darkhan - Daruhan (English spelling)

Located in northern Mongolia, it is the country's third largest city. It is located 188 km north-northwest of the capital, Ulaanbaatar. It has a population of 65,791 (2000). Since 1961, it has been built adjacent to the village of the same name as a new industrial base with assistance from COMECON (Community Economic Cooperation) countries. Currently, it is one of Mongolia's leading industrial cities, along with Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet (home to a copper-molybdenum complex). There is a railway line connecting Mongolia with the Russian Federation, and it is also connected by railway to the Sharyngool coalfield in the east and Erdenet in the west. There are thermal power plants and factories producing construction materials, bricks, cement, fur, meat, etc.

モンゴル北部、同国第三の都市。首都ウランバートルの北北西188キロメートルに位置する。人口6万5791（2000）。1961年以来、COMECON(コメコン)（経済相互援助会議）諸国の援助を得て新工業基地として同名の集落に接して建設された。現在はウランバートル、エルデネト（銅モリブデン・コンビナートがある）と並んでモンゴルを代表する工業都市である。モンゴルとロシア連邦を結ぶ鉄道が通り、また東のシャリンゴル炭田、西のエルデネトとも鉄道で結ばれている。火力発電所や建設資材、れんが、セメント、毛皮、食肉などの工場がある。
