For example, the reason why swellings on the eyelids are called monomorai, meboito, mekojiki, and other words that mean beggar comes from a folk remedy that involves going around to the houses in the neighborhood, sticking your hand through a hole in the shoji screen, asking for small amounts of food and eating it as you go. It is also a well-known custom that stealing and eating dumplings on the night of the 15th night of August will make you healthy, and the custom of young people and children dressing up as beggars and going around asking for money and food from houses around the time of Little New Year, called kasedori or kotokoto, was once widespread throughout the country. It is thought that this practice is based on the belief that by sharing food, people can join forces with many people and live healthier lives.
