... The major art trends of the 20th century, apart from Cubism, can be traced in sequence in Belgium. Fauvism is represented by the sculptor Wouters, while the robust, constructive Belgian version of Expressionism is represented by painters such as Constant Permeke (1886-1952) of the second "Latemse school." On the other hand, the first "Latem school," including the painter Valerius de Saedeleer (1867-1941), who preceded them and settled in the small village of Sint-Martens-Latem near Ghent in the early 20th century, sought to depict the mysteries of reality, drawing on nature and the traditions of their own country. ...
