…Four Acts of Parliament for the North American colonies were passed between June and autumn 1767, proposed by Charles Townshend (1725-67), the British Chancellor of the Exchequer. He announced a reduction in land taxes, winning the support of the landowners in the home country, and for the American colonists, he sought to increase revenue in the form of duties on the Navigation Acts, following the example of the Stamp Act. The Revenue Acts imposed import duties on glass, lead, paint, paper, tea, etc., which the colonies imported, and used them to pay the salaries of colonial officials appointed by the home country, eliminating the influence of the colonial assemblies. …
