Ogido Shell Mound

Japanese:
Ogido Shell Mound

A shell mound located in Ogidou, Kitanakagusuku Village, Okinawa Prefecture. This shell mound is representative of the early period of Okinawa's prehistoric period (known as the shell mound period), and is a nationally designated historic site. It was discovered by Torii Ryuzo in 1904 (Meiji 37). In 1919 (Taisho 8), Matsumura Akira of the University of Tokyo conducted an excavation survey, and the results were compiled in a report titled "Ryukyu Ogidou Shell Mound" (1920). A large number of flat-bottomed, jar-shaped pottery with small protrusions on the rim and Jomon-style patterns were excavated, and after World War II it was given the name "Ogidou-style pottery," which became the standard type for the early period in the chronology.

The shell mound period in Okinawa is understood to have arisen under the influence of the Jomon culture, which became indigenous and individualized, and this shell mound provided valuable evidence in confirming this commonly held belief. Excavated pottery is kept in the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo.
