Orissa (state)

A state in eastern India facing the inner Bay of Bengal. It has an area of 156,000 km2 and a population of 31.66 million (1991). Its capital is Bhubaneswar. It consists of coastal plains and inland mountainous areas. In the center of the coastal plain lies the vast Mahanadi River delta, 80 km wide and 170 km long at its alluvial fan end. The annual precipitation of the river system is 1,400-1,600 mm, with 80% of this occurring during the southwest monsoon season from June to September. As a result, the difference in flow rate between the high and low seasons is extremely large, and floods were frequent until the completion of the Hirakud Dam (a multipurpose earth dam completed in 1957) near the state border.

インド東部の州。ベンガル湾の湾奥部に面する。面積15万6000km2，人口3166万(1991)。州都はブバネーシュワル。海岸平野と内陸山地からなる。海岸平野の中央に幅80km，扇端部の長さ170kmの広大なマハナディ川デルタが広がる。同水系の年降水量は1400～1600mmで，その80％までが6～9月の南西モンスーン季に集中する。そのためこの川の豊水期と渇水期との流量差は極度に大きく，州境近くのヒラクド･ダム(多目的アースダムで，1957完成)の完成までは，洪水が頻発した。
