...A famous layperson in the Mahayana sutras is Vimalakirti, the protagonist of the Vimalakirti Sutra, in which famous monks who were direct disciples of Shakyamuni are subjected to scathing criticism from the standpoint of emptiness by the layperson Vimalakirti. Mahayana sutras also often contain the words good men (kulaputra) and good women (kuladuhitṛ), meaning men and women of good family background, and it can be inferred that these various laypeople were the main carriers of Mahayana Buddhism.
