Zhao Zuo (English name)

Japanese: 趙左 - ちょうさ（英語表記）Zhao Zuo

A literati painter active in the latter half of the Wanli period (1573-1620) of the Ming Dynasty in China. Born in Songjiang (Shanghai), his pen name was Wendu. He studied under Song Xu along with Song Maojin, and was later said to have studied Dong Yuan, Huang Gongwang, and Ni Zan. He was close to Dong Qichang and Chen Jiryu, who were from his hometown, and was influenced by them. He is said to have created counterfeit copies of Dong Qichang's works, but he created his own style using burnt ink and dried brushstrokes. The school founded by Zhao Zuo is called the Su Song School.

中国，明の万暦期 (1573～1620) の後半に活躍した文人画家。松江 (上海) の人。字は文度。宋懋晋 (そうぼうしん) とともに宋旭に師事し，のちには董源，黄公望，倪瓚 (げいさん) を学ぶと評された。同郷の董其昌，陳継儒らと親しくその影響を受け，董其昌の贋本を作ったともいわれるが，焦墨枯筆を用いて独自の様式をつくり上げた。趙左を祖とする一派を蘇松派と呼ぶ。
