Kama Sutra - Kāmasūtra (English spelling)

Kama Sutra - Kāmasūtra (English spelling)

An ancient Indian erotic text written by Bhatsyayana (around the 4th century). Ancient Indians respected dharma (law), artha (interest), and kama (love) as the three elements of life, and many sutras were written on each of them. Kama texts explain the key points of sexual love between men and women in prose or verse, and their contents include the importance of the three major elements of life (dharma, interest, and love), the life of citizens, 64 types of arts, and various aspects of men and women. They also cover topics such as erotic techniques, intimacy with girls, marriage, wives, prostitutes, seduction, sorcery, and medicines. Erotic texts are closely related to Sanskrit literature, and literary works often use love sutra-style (pornographic) descriptions. The Kama Sutra is the oldest and most important of all erotic texts, and is divided into seven parts: the first is a general discussion, the second is sexual intercourse, the third is relations with virgins, the fourth is the attitude wives and daughters should take, the fifth is affairs with married women, the sixth is courtesans, and the seventh is secret techniques, with 64 further subdivisions. It is an important document in classical Sanskrit literature and in the study of ancient Indian society, and many similar works remain, including the Ratirahasya and Anangaranga.
