The main river in central Chile. It originates at the foot of the Maipo volcano (5,323 m above sea level) in the Andes, flows first northwest and then west, passing through San Bernardo, and merging with the Mapocho River, which flows through Santiago, in the central plain, and empties into the Pacific Ocean south of San Antonio. It is used for irrigation in this fertile region, and there are power plants upstream. It is about 250 km long. The decisive Battle of Maipu (old name for Maipo) (1818), fought near the confluence southwest of Santiago, was the battle that decided Chile's independence.
