...also called the Nobel Prize of mathematics, it is awarded at the International Congress of Mathematicians held every four years to two to four mathematicians, generally under the age of 40, who have made outstanding achievements in the past four years. The award was established by a donation of funds from the will of J.C. Fields (1863-1932), a professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto. He hoped that the award should be open to mathematicians all over the world, and that it should not only be a recognition of achievements already made, but also a means of encouraging the recipients to continue to work hard in the future. ...
