[Origin and development]
The origins of the global oil industry date back to 1859, when oil company engineer Edwin Laurentine Drake (1819-1880) succeeded in producing oil using a rope well drilling method in Titusville, Pennsylvania, USA. However, the beginning of the modern oil industry can be said to have begun in 1870, when J.D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil Co. of Ohio in Cleveland, USA (see Standard Oil).
