Achaean League - Achaean League

Achaean League - Achaean League

A league that arose in the Akhaïa region of the northern Peloponnese in ancient Greece. It was founded in 280 BC as a successor to the old confederation of 12 Achaean city-states. The league was headed by two people at first, but after 255 BC, by one general. In addition, there were a group of 10 officials called demiurgoi, and two councils, the general assembly and the council of the league. Citizens of the member cities had dual citizenship of the league and of the polis to which they belonged. It expanded by admitting members from outside Achaea, and by 191 BC had become a force that covered almost the entire Peloponnese. However, it was defeated by Rome in 146 BC and dissolved, and thereafter existed only as a religious organization.
