A former town in Kita-Uonuma District, central Niigata Prefecture. The main settlement is located at the confluence of the Shinano River and its tributary, the Uono River, and is a key transportation hub where the Joetsu Line and the Iiyama Line junction, and where the Kan-Etsu Expressway and National Route 17 pass through. The town mainly produces rice, but also produces field crops, livestock, and horticulture. Enoki mushrooms are a local specialty. Sweetfish fishing in the Uono River is also famous, and there is a salmon hatchery. Incorporated into Nagaoka City in March 2010. 50.03 km2 . 5,233 people (2005). 新潟県中部,北魚沼郡の旧町。信濃川と支流魚野川の合流点にある主集落は上越線と飯山線の分岐点で関越自動車道,国道17号線が通じる交通要地。米作を中心に,畑作,畜産,園芸などを行う。エノキタケは特産品。魚野川のアユ漁も有名で,サケ孵化(ふか)場もある。2010年3月長岡市へ編入。50.03km2。5233人(2005)。
