1624‐77 A mystical religious poet of the German Baroque period. His real name was Johann Scheffler. He studied medicine in various places and became a physician to the court of his native country. During that time, he became familiar with the works of mystics such as Tauler and Boehme, and was rejected by the strict Protestant sect. He converted to Catholicism in 1653. Following the example of Daniel von Czepko (1605-60), who applied Opitz's poetics to religious poetry, he wrote a collection of epigrams, Der Cherubin Anglican Wanderer (1675), consisting of two lines of Alexandriner verse. In these epigrams, his religious suffering, his experience of God through his confession of faith, and the unity of the mind with God are expressed simply and beautifully, along with mystical and natural philosophical ideas.
