...However, due to a breakdown in unity within the military, one of the bases of support for the government, a coup took place in Chittagong in May 1981, and President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated. The rebels were quickly put down, and Abdus Sattar, who became acting president, won the presidential election in November, but in March 1982 the military staged another coup, and Lieutenant General Hossain Mohammad Ershad (1930-), Chief of Army Staff, took control of the country.
