... In 1856, the Parisian printmaker Bracquemond discovered the Hokusai Manga, which had been sent to the publisher A. Delâtre by chance, and was used to pack ceramics. He was amazed by the quality of the drawings, and shared them with his fellow painters Manet, Degas, Whistler, and critics Champfleury and P. Burty. It is said that this sparked an extraordinary interest in Japanese art among a group of young painters who would go on to form the Impressionist movement. There are some who disagree about the veracity of this claim, but it is true that in Bracquemond's works from the 1960s, there were designs that clearly quoted Hiroshige's Fish Dishes and the Hokusai Manga, and there were many examples of Japonésrie added to the paintings of Whistler, Manet, and James Jacques-Joseph Tissot (1836-1902). The number of Japonisans also increased rapidly. ...
