Russian composer and musicologist. Born in St. Petersburg, he studied under composer Lyadov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and worked as a pianist accompanying ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre, where he gained experience in theater music. After the establishment of the Soviet government, he continued to compose, but also worked as a leading theorist and critic of socialist realism, publishing many books. In 1925, he became a professor at his alma mater. As a composer, he followed the style of 19th century Russian music, leaving behind a total of 28 ballets, operas, and symphonies, including "Bakhchisarai Fountain" (1934), which is still frequently performed today.

ロシアの作曲家，音楽学者。サンクト・ペテルブルクに生まれ，同地の音楽院で作曲家リャードフらに学んだのちマリインスキー劇場にバレエ伴奏ピアノ奏者として勤務。劇場音楽の経験を深める。ソビエト政権成立後は作曲活動の一方，社会主義リアリズム路線の代表的理論家・評論家として活動し，多くの著書を刊行。1925年母校教授。作曲家としては19世紀ロシア音楽の様式を踏襲し，今日でも上演の機会の多い《バフチサライの泉》（1934年）ほか全28曲のバレエ音楽，オペラ，交響曲などを残した。
