...A general term for an event in which concerts and opera performances are held intensively over a certain period of time. Names synonymous with the English "music festival" are found in other languages, but some events have names that mean "music week," "festival week," "festival performance," "musical days," etc. The origins of music festivals can be traced back to medieval singing contests between minstrels, but the form that is commonly held today was created in the late 19th century or later.
