...Western Cameroon divided into the north and south and held a referendum, which resulted in the north merging with Nigeria, while the south gained independence in October 1961, and at the same time formed the Federal Republic of Cameroon with the Republic of Cameroon. The first president of this federation was Ahmadou Ahidjo (1924-1989) of Eastern Cameroon, and JN Foncha of Western Cameroon was elected vice-president. The allocation of seats in the National Assembly was 40 in the east and 10 in the west, giving the east an advantage, reflecting the difference in area and population. Furthermore, the federation gradually became more and more of a formality, and institutional reforms were made to allow the federal government to exercise strong authority over the regions, and in 1966, a new party, the Union Nationale de Cameroon (UNC), was formed to unite existing parties and form a one-party system spanning both the east and west. ...
