...Western Cameroon divided into the north and south and held a referendum, which resulted in the north merging with Nigeria, while the south gained independence in October 1961, and at the same time formed the Federal Republic of Cameroon with the Republic of Cameroon. The first president of this federation was Ahmadou Ahidjo (1924-1989) of Eastern Cameroon, and JN Foncha of Western Cameroon was elected vice-president. The allocation of seats in the National Assembly was 40 in the east and 10 in the west, giving the east an advantage, reflecting the difference in area and population. Furthermore, the federation gradually became more and more of a formality, and institutional reforms were made to allow the federal government to exercise strong authority over the regions, and in 1966, a new party, the Union Nationale de Cameroon (UNC), was formed to unite existing parties and form a one-party system spanning both the east and west. ...

…西カメルーンは北部と南部に分かれて人民投票を実施した結果，北部はナイジェリアと合併することになり，南部だけが61年10月に独立すると同時に，カメルーン共和国とともにカメルーン連邦共和国を結成した。　この連邦は，初代大統領に東カメルーンのアヒジョAhmadou Ahidjo(1924‐89)が，副大統領に西カメルーンのJ.N.フォンチャが選ばれたほか，国民議会の議席配分が東の40に対して西の10といったように，面積，人口の違いを反映して東部優位であった。さらに連邦はその後しだいに形骸化の度を強め，連邦政府が地方に対して強い権限を行使しうる方向で制度改革が進められ，また66年には既存の諸政党を糾合した新政党カメルーン民族同盟(UNC)の東西にまたがる一党体制が成立した。…
