British banker and author. He succeeded his father, who was also a banker, and wrote many books while also taking over the management of the bank. His book on archaeology, Prehistory (1865), proposed calling the chipped stone age the Paleolithic and the ground stone age the Neolithic. Prior to this, in 1860, he surveyed valleys in Britain and France, such as the Thames and the Somme, and confirmed the existence of the Paleolithic, when humans and extinct fossil mammals lived together. He was interested not only in archaeology, but also in biology, geology, ethology, and folklore, and was involved in various social activities, serving as a member of the House of Commons, honorary vice-chancellor of the University of London, and president of the London Chamber of Commerce.
