A Korean conglomerate. It was so named because it was developed by the Kim clan, a large landowner in Jeolla Province (also called Honam). In 1919, Kim Soong-soo established the Keiseong Spinning Company, which subsequently expanded into Central Commerce and Industry, Samyangsa (farm management), and Haedong Bank, before establishing the South Manchuria Spinning Company in 1938 and expanding into Manchuria. It grew to be the largest indigenous industrial capital in colonial Korea, but was financially controlled by Japanese capital. On the other hand, it is considered a typical example of the dual nature of ethnic capital, as can be seen in the fact that it also ran the East Asia Daily Newspaper and Bosung College (later Korea University), and became a base for right-wing nationalists.
