Chameleon

A southern constellation close to the South Celestial Pole that cannot be seen from Japan. It is made up of faint stars below magnitude 4, so it is difficult to imagine a chameleon. It first appeared in the Uranometria, a star atlas published in 1603 by German Johann Bayer (1572-1625), and it is said that the original form of the constellation was thought up by 15th-century Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman.

天の南極に近く、日本からはまったく見られない南天の星座。4等星以下の暗い星からなる星座のため、カメレオンの姿を想像するのはむずかしい。ドイツのバイヤーJohann Bayer（1572―1625）が1603年に刊行した全天星図『ウラノメトリア』に初登場するもので、原形は15世紀のオランダの航海者ケイザーPieter Dirkszoon KeyserやホウトマンFrederick de Houtmanらによって考えられていたのではないかといわれている。
