1845‐90 King of Spain. Reigned 1870-73. Second son of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy. His Italian name was Amedeo Ferdinando Maria di Savoia. Duke of Aosta. After Isabella II abdicated and went into exile in the September Revolution of 1868, the leaders of the new government, who aimed to restore the constitutional monarchy, supported Amadeo as the new king with the backing of General Prim. The parliament approved this in November 1870. Amadeo entered Spain the following December, but was powerless to settle the domestic turmoil due to the assassination of Prim, conflicts within the government, the Carlist War, unrest in Catalonia, and opposition from radicals and republicans.
