Tell al-Sawwan (English spelling)

...Population: about 57,000 (1973). In recent years, alabaster statuettes of women from the 6th millennium BC and painted pottery from the 5th millennium BC have been discovered at the ruins of Tell al-Sawwan, located in the southeastern suburbs of the city. During the Abbasid period, the 8th caliph, Mu'tasim al-Mu'taṣim (reigned 833-842), moved the government here from Baghdad, and it flourished as the capital for about 50 years (836-892).

From Mesopotamia

...In the 6th millennium BC, more advanced village cultures were seen in Halaf (Halaf culture) in eastern Syria and Hassuna (Hassuna culture) in northern Iraq. A little later, the Samarran culture was established at Chogha Mami in the Zagros hills and Tell al-Sawwān near Samarra. The former was in an area with the marginal rainfall for rain-fed agriculture, while the latter was completely impossible.
