Picture scrolls. These are pictures of annual events, such as court ceremonies, festivals, Buddhist services, and religious customs of the people during the Heian period. At the end of the Heian period, Emperor Goshirakawa commissioned the production of over 60 volumes of picture scrolls, mainly by Tokiwa Mitsunaga, and had Fujiwara Motofusa proofread them, placing them in the treasure house of Rengeoin (Sanjusangendo) and passing them down to posterity. The originals were gradually scattered, and those that remained were burned down several times during the Edo period in fires at the Imperial Palace. Currently, copies made before they were lost are known and are kept by the Tanaka family and others. This includes 16 volumes of Hakubyo copies made by Tosa Hiromichi (Sumiyoshi Jokei) of the originals kept at the Imperial Court around 1661 (Kanbun 1), and conveys designs from 24 or 25 volumes in total. Although they are modern copies, they are extremely valuable as documents on the customs and customs of the Heian period.
