A mountain range stretching from northwest to southeast through central Germany. Bounded in the northwest by the Werra River, a tributary of the Weser River, and in the southeast by the Saale River, a tributary of the Elbe River, it forms the watershed between the Weser River system, the Elbe River system, and the Rhine-Main River system. In the southeast, it continues into the Franken-Walt. Its elevation ranges from 650 to 850 meters, with the highest peak being Beerberg (982 meters) in the center, followed by Schneekopf (978 meters) and Inselsberg (916 meters). Old roads run through the Norway spruce forests along the mountain ridges, and forestry is a thriving industry. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
