[Parathyroid Abnormalities]
Abnormalities in the function of the parathyroid gland cause metabolic disorders of calcium and phosphorus. These include hyperparathyroidism, which leads to hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia, resulting in nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dry mouth, and weakness, and hypoparathyroidism, which leads to hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia, increased nerve excitability, and muscle spasms (convulsions), including tetany. In severe cases of hypothyroidism, generalized convulsions (tetany) can cause breathing difficulties and death by suffocation.
