Winter Prayer - Kannebutsu
〘Noun〙 (A variation of "kannenbutsu (cold chanting of Buddha)") 1. A practice of going out into the mountains and fields at dawn for 30 days during the coldest of winter days and chanting the chant of Buddha aloud. It was mostly practiced among monks, but later it came to be practiced among laypeople as well, who would ring gongs and chant prayers and chant nembutsu on cold nights while visiting Buddhist temples, or going around chanting nembutsu, asking for gratitude from house to house. (Adjective-verb) (By extension) To go around begging for money or goods like a beggar. Also, the state of being like that. ※Comedy book, Zoku Hizakurige (1810-22) vol. 10 “I spent it all without a penny, and returned home in a miserable , cold journey.”

〘名〙 (「かんねんぶつ(寒念仏)」の変化した語)① 寒中三〇日の間、明け方に山野に出て、声高く念仏を唱える修行。多く僧の間で行なわれたが、後には、俗人の間でも寒夜に鉦(かね)をうち、和讚や念仏を唱えて仏寺に詣でたり、念仏を唱えながら巡行して、家々に報謝を請い歩くことにもなった。《季・冬》 〔俳諧・増山の井(1663)〕※俳諧・軒端の独活(1680)乾「まつとかや其の暁の寒念仏〈言水〉」② (形動) (転じて)物貰いのように金品を乞い歩くこと。また、そのさま。※滑稽本・続膝栗毛(1810‐22)一〇「壱文なしにつかひやして、かへりはみじめ寒念仏(カンネブツ)な道中」
