With this as a backdrop, a military coup by EOKA, an underground movement promoting enosis, broke out in July 1974, expelling Makarios. Turkey immediately intervened militarily and occupied the northern part of the island. As a result, the coup failed and Makarios returned to the presidency, but in February 1975, Turkish Vice President Denktaş declared the establishment of the Turkish Cyprus Federal State (and in 1983, it declared independence as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).
