…Not only Turkey but also Greece was dissatisfied with the Makarios government, which took a non-aligned neutral stance, and a military government was born in Greece. With this as a backdrop, a military coup by EOKA, an underground movement promoting enosis, broke out in July 1974, expelling Makarios. Turkey immediately intervened militarily and occupied the northern part of the island. As a result, the coup failed and Makarios returned to the presidency, but in February 1975, Turkish Vice President Denktaş declared the establishment of the Turkish Cyprus Federal State (and in 1983, it declared independence as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). Makarios took the matter to the United Nations, and the UN's mediation efforts continue with the UN's troops stationed there, but the issue is rooted in a long history of conflict between Greece and Turkey, both of which are members of NATO, since the early 19th century, and it is not easy to find a solution. …
