Catkins - Amentiferae

Japanese: 尾状花序群 - びじょうかじょぐん（英語表記）Amentiferae

A group of dicotyledonous plants, such as Fagaceae and Juglandaceae, have long inflorescences that resemble the tails of an animal, and are called the catkin group. All of these plant groups are woody, primarily wind-pollinated, and have relatively simple unisexual flowers with no petals, so they are also called apetalous. If we take the position that flowers with petals evolved from simple, petalless flowers such as the apetalous group in the origin of angiosperms, then the catkin group is considered to be one of the most primitive plant groups.

ブナ科，クルミ科など一群の双子葉植物は，獣の尾のような長い花序をもち，尾状花序群と呼ばれる。これらの植物群はいずれも木本で，主として風媒花であり，花は比較的単純な単性花で，花弁がないなどの共通した性質をもつので，無花弁類とも呼ばれる。被子植物の起源について，この無花弁類のような花弁のない単純な構造の花から花弁をもつ花が進化したとする立場をとれば，尾状花序群は最も原始的な植物群の一つであると考えられる。
