Ao dai (English spelling)

Japanese: アオザイ(英語表記)ao dai
Ao dai (English spelling)
Traditional national clothing for Vietnamese women. It was created by assimilating traditional Chinese clothing to the Vietnamese climate and ethnicity. It consists of a long top called a chosan (long robe) with a Chinese-style collar and front opening, and loose-fitting trousers called kūtsu. The chosan is tailored to fit the body closely, with a slit from the hem to the waist. Patterns, colors, and fabrics vary according to taste and fashion. The kūtsu is made wide and loose, with the same shape on the front and back, and is usually made of plain white satin, although in recent years it has often been made differently. When going out, it is worn with a hat-shaped sun hat and sandals or zori, although in recent years the hat is often omitted. Originally it was clothing for the upper class, but today it is common to wear it both as everyday wear and as formal attire.
