…The name given by Europeans to the area that is now the coast of the Republic of Liberia in West Africa. European navigators who set out on voyages of discovery in search of spices from the East were delighted to find the pepper-like seeds of the Guinea ginger plant ( Aframomum melegueta ), which grows wild in the area and is also used as a spice by the local people, and gave it this name. As with other areas along the Gulf of Guinea, it is unclear whether the first Europeans to reach the area were the Portuguese (15th century) or sailors from Dieppe in northern France earlier (14th century). …
