...In the southern islands of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, gongs have protuberances and are played mainly in melodic style, which is quite different from the northern part of the country. The gongs are arranged horizontally on a frame, and the ensemble is centered around the kulintang, which is characterized by a five-tone scale and regular division of time using colotomy (musical punctuation). Other representative Philippine instruments include the mouth harp (bamboo kebin, metal onna), the kujapi (kachapi) with a boat-shaped pluck, the nose flute, the split drum, the pounded bamboo pipe, and the headband-style mouthpiece flute.
