Image destruction

Image destruction

…In contrast, image worship was not an issue in the Eastern churches, such as the Nestorians and Monophysites, and even in the West, image worship was only discussed from a purely educational standpoint for the faithful. The icon theology of the Greek church was not properly understood by the Carolingian theologians, who were resistant to the doctrines of the Council of Nicaea, and the Pope had to convince them of its correctness. [Kinichi Watanabe]
[art]
In the narrow sense, iconoclasm refers to the destruction of sacred images that took place in the Byzantine Empire in the 8th and 9th centuries, but the aversion to using naturalistic images, especially human figures, to represent the transcendent or invisible sacred has appeared widely in art history in opposition to iconographic art (such as the naturalistic anthropomorphic gods of Greece and Rome). Primitive religions generally did not depict supernatural beings, and Shintoism did not have statues of gods for a long time, and even in Buddhist art, Buddha was represented exclusively by symbols (such as the Bodhi tree) until it was inspired by the West.
