A city in the southern Ishikari Plain, Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city is located about 45 km southeast of Sapporo, and is home to New Chitose Airport. The Chitose Line runs through the city, the Sekisho Line branches off from it, and the Do-o Expressway, Doto Expressway, and National Route 36 pass through the city. Lake Shikotsu is in the west, and the Umaoi Hills are in the east. Rice, field crops, and dairy farming are the main agricultural industries. In 1989, the city was designated as the Do-o Technopolis, and ICs and electrical equipment are produced thriving in the city. The Chitose River, which flows out of Lake Shikotsu, has a salmon and trout hatchery. There are bases for the Ground Self-Defense Force and the Air Self-Defense Force. Chitose Airport, which opened for civilian air routes in 1961, became Chitose Airfield for the Self-Defense Forces after New Chitose Airport was built to the east in 1986. New Chitose Airport has 27 domestic and 3 international routes in service, and became a 24-hour airport in 1994. It plays an important role as the gateway to Hokkaido. Area: 594.50 ^km2 . 北海道石狩平野南部の市。1958年市制。市街は札幌市街の南東約45km，新千歳空港があり，千歳線が通じ石勝線が分岐し，道央自動車道，道東自動車道，国道36号線が通じる。西部に支笏(しこつ)湖，東部に馬追丘陵がある。農業は米作，畑作，酪農が行われる。工業では1989年道央テクノポリスに指定され，IC，電気機器などの生産が盛んである。支笏湖から流出する千歳川にはサケ・マスの孵化(ふか)場がある。陸上自衛隊，航空自衛隊の基地がある。1961年に民間航空路線が開設された千歳空港は，1986年その東側に新千歳空港が新設されてからは自衛隊用の千歳飛行場となった。新千歳空港は国内線27，国際線３の路線が就航，1994年には24時間空港となって，北海道の玄関口として重要な役割を果している。594.50km²。９万3604人（2010）。
