He was the lord of Ogata Manor in Ono County, Bungo (Oita Prefecture). He was a retainer of Taira no Shigemori, but in 1181 he sided with the Minamoto clan, and in 1183 he participated in the pursuit of the Taira clan and helped Minamoto no Noriyori land in Kyushu.
