...This phenomenon was first discovered by A. von Chamisso in a planktonic protochordate called Salpa . In this animal, a generation that reproduces sexually and lives alone alternates with a generation that reproduces asexually and lives in colonies, and J. J. Steenstrup (1813-97) of Denmark named this phenomenon "alteration of generations" (1841). The moon jellyfish, which are common along the coasts of Japan, also exhibit a clear alternation of generations. ...
