...Since 1959, the party has not sent any members to the Bundestag. The Austrian Freedom Party (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs) (FPÖ) cannot be ignored as a party that holds the casting vote if neither of the two major parties can gain an absolute majority in the lower house, but its composition is a motley collection of elements. The Verband der Unabhängigen (Unabhängigen), a nationalist group founded in 1948 and including remnants of the former Nazi Party, was reorganized in 1956 by absorbing some liberals and conservatives.
