...Under this policy, Akira Kurosawa's parody of Kanjincho, The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail (1945), which was filmed towards the end of the war and could be considered the first period drama completed after the war, was banned (it was first released in 1952).
[Postwar period dramas]
Postwar period dramas began with the human interest film The Baby Given by the Fox directed by Marune Santaro, followed by Five Women About Utamaro directed by Mizoguchi Kenji, Kunisada Chuji directed by Matsuda Sadatsugu, and A Wanderer Passes By directed by Ito Daisuke, all of which were completely devoid of sword fighting. Stars of period dramas such as Bando Tsumasaburo, Hasegawa Kazuo, Okochi Denjiro, Kataoka Chiezo, and Ichikawa Utaemon often appeared in unfamiliar modern dramas, and the gangster films of Kataoka Chiezo and Ichikawa Utaemon, for example, were simply adaptations of period drama patterns into modern dramas, and were therefore also known as "period dramas without topknots."

　戦後の時代劇は，丸根賛太郎監督の人情もの《狐の呉れた赤ん坊》を第1作に，溝口健二監督《歌麿をめぐる五人の女》，松田定次監督《国定忠治》，伊藤大輔監督《素浪人罷通る》など，チャンバラのまったくない時代劇として出発した。阪東妻三郎，長谷川一夫，大河内伝次郎，片岡千恵蔵，市川右太衛門などの時代劇スターは，なれない現代劇に多く出演し，たとえば片岡千恵蔵や市川右太衛門のギャング映画は，時代劇のパターンを単純に現代劇に移し変えたものであったので，〈髷をつけない時代劇〉とも呼ばれた。…
