Around 1275 - 1313
The first German king of the House of Luxembourg (reigned 1308-13) and Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1312-13). After the assassination of Albert I of the Habsburgs, which led to the failure of their plan to strengthen the monarchy, the princes chose him, a West German prince, as king, just as the Habsburgs had done in 1273. This was due to the powerful efforts of his brother, Archbishop Balduin of Trier. Through a marriage policy, he gave his son Johann the Bohemian throne (1310), and, like the Habsburgs, shifted the center of gravity of the family to the east.
