1876‐1965 An Egyptian politician from the Wafd Party. After the death of Saad Zaghloul in 1927, he became head of the Wafd Party, and led national movements in and outside of parliament during the interwar period to negotiate a treaty with Britain in order to end Egypt's semi-independent state under British military rule. He also served in government several times. However, in the early 1930s, in the midst of the Great Depression and the tensions in relations between Britain and Italy in Egypt, Nahas shifted the focus of the treaty negotiations from complete independence to the adjustment of economic frictions, placing the highest priority on achieving political and economic appeasement between the two countries.
