Mass pilgrimages to Ise Shrine were seen during the Edo period. Rumors of divine charms, such as the rain of a divine talisman, prompted crowds of people from all over to make the pilgrimage. Four large-scale pilgrimages are known to have taken place in 1650, 1705, 1771, and 1830, with approximately 2.1 million people participating in the 1771 pilgrimage and approximately 4.3 million in the 1830 pilgrimage. Pilgrims were given food and other gifts along the way, and later the attire for pilgrimages, consisting of a hat on the head and a ladle in hand, became common, and the "Okage Dance" also became popular. There were also many "nukemairi" (visits without permission) by young men and women servants, as well as children, who would sneak out and join in without permission from their masters or family members.
