Animal path

This refers to a path between resting and feeding areas of wild animals. Wild animals have fixed paths within their range of activity, such as between resting or hiding places and feeding areas, and they often move along the same route. In forests and grasslands, these paths are cleared and the ground is trampled down, and in the case of brown rats and brown rats, they are dirty with footprints. All of these are called animal trails, and hunters, especially trappers, read these paths to determine hunting grounds, and placing poison bait on these paths is effective for exterminating rats. In hunting terms and archaic words, they are also called uji, utsu, wari, and kayoi. Hikers can mistake paths often used by wild boars and deer for hiking trails and get lost. Such paths are also called deer trails or boar trails.

野生獣の休息地と採食地などの間にできた通路をいう。野生の獣類では、休息場や隠れ場と採食地との間など、その行動圏内の通路が定まっていて、同じコースを移動することが多い。森林中や草原ではこの通路がかき分けられ、地面が踏み固められているし、ドブネズミやクマネズミでは足跡で汚れている。これらはいずれも獣道とよばれ、猟師、とくにわな猟師はこの通路を読み取って猟場を定めるし、ネズミの駆除でもこの通路に毒餌(どくじ)を置くのが効果的である。狩猟用語や古語では、ウジ、ウツ、ワリ、カヨイなどともよばれる。イノシシやシカのよく使う通路には、ハイカーが登山路と間違って入り込み、迷うことがある。こういう道はシシ道、シカ道ともいわれる。
