A commercial and industrial city in central-eastern Bangladesh. Population 296,000 (1991). Located near the confluence of the Dharaswari, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, its river port is the world's largest jute export port and serves as the outer port of the capital Dhaka, about 15 km northwest. After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, many jute factories were built, including the Adamjee Mill, Pakistan's largest, and it grew into a jute processing base that replaced the area around Calcutta during the British colonial era.
