Music Festival - Ongakusai

A festival-like event in which musical performances, operas, etc. are held intensively over a certain period of time. It became popular after the Second World War. Many of them are sponsored or substantially funded by the government or broadcasting stations.

Music festivals can be classified into the following categories based on their purpose: (1) Internationally renowned musicians are invited to hold a series of concerts and opera performances in a specific location or city. (2) Festivals that focus on performances of works by a specific composer. Although this type of music festival often bears the name of the composer, it does not necessarily have to be held in a place associated with the composer. (3) Festivals that have a specific goal or feature performances of limited pieces, such as old music, contemporary music, or jazz festivals. (4) Festivals that are linked to other events. These are often held by musicians who have gathered to serve as judges for music competitions or professors for seminars, but there are also many cases where they are considered part of (1) or (3).

Besides classical music, there are many music festivals in various fields held around the world. Here are some of the major music festivals that have been attracting a lot of attention for many years. For jazz, there is the Newport Jazz Festival (held since 1954) in the United States, the Monterey Jazz Festival (since 1958), the Concord Jazz Festival (since 1981), the Montreux Jazz Festival (since 1967) in Switzerland, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival (since 1979) in Canada. In Japan, there is the Summer Jazz Festival (Tokyo) which has been held since 1969, and the Newport Jazz Festival in Madarao since 1982. For canzone, the San Remo Music Festival, which has been held in Italy since 1951 and is a new song competition, is famous. For rock, the Fuji Rock Festival, which has been held in Japan since 1997 and features many international stars, is very popular.

一定期間に集中的に演奏やオペラなどの上演が行われる祭典的な催し。第二次世界大戦後盛んに行われるようになった。その多くは、国や放送局の主催ないしは大幅な財政援助により催されている。

　音楽祭はその目的などにより次のように分類される。(1)国際的に著名な音楽家を招集し、特定の場所、都市で連続的に演奏会、オペラの上演などを行うもの。(2)特定の作曲家の作品を集中的に演奏・上演するもの。この種の音楽祭には作曲家の名が冠される場合が多いが、開催地は作曲家ゆかりの土地とは限らない。(3)特定の目標や限定された曲目を演奏・上演するもの。古い音楽、現代音楽、ジャズ・フェスティバルなど。(4)他の催しと結び付いたもの。これは音楽コンクールの審査員、講習会の教授として集まった音楽家たちによる場合が多いが、(1)(3)の一環とされる例も少なくない。

　クラシック音楽関係以外にも、世界各国でさまざまな分野の音楽祭が行われている。長年にわたって広く注目されているおもな音楽祭をあげておこう。ジャズでは、アメリカのニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバル（1954年から開催）、モンテレー・ジャズ・フェスティバル（1958～）、コンコード・ジャズ・フェスティバル（1981～）、スイスのモントルー・ジャズ・フェスティバル（1967～）、カナダのモントリオール国際ジャズ・フェスティバル（1979～）などがある。日本では、1969年からのサマー・ジャズ・フェスティバル（東京）、82年からのニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバル・イン・斑尾(まだらお)などがあげられる。カンツォーネでは、イタリアで1951年から開催の新曲コンクール形式によるサン・レモ音楽祭が有名。ロックでは、日本で1997年から開催されている、海外スター多数が参加するフジ・ロック・フェスティバルの人気が高い。
