A former town in Nasu County, eastern Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies the Naka River basin, famous for its sweetfish, and the surrounding hills. The central town on the west bank of the Naka River developed as a castle town, and as the terminus of the Karasuyama Line, it is home to textile and metal industries, and is famous for its Japanese paper. Rural areas produce a lot of rice and tobacco leaves. Yakumo Shrine is famous for its Yamaage Festival. 栃木県東部,那須郡の旧町。アユで著名な那珂(なか)川流域と周辺の丘陵地を占める。那珂川西岸の中心市街は城下町として発達,烏山線の終点で,繊維・金属工業が行われ,和紙などを特産。農村部では米,葉タバコを多産。八雲神社は山揚げ祭で有名。2005年10月,那須郡南那須町と合併し市制,那須烏山市となる。92.86km2。1万9246人(2003)。
