Cellarius, C. (English spelling) CellariusC

...It originates from the fact that the leaders of the 16th century European Renaissance movement considered the new era that was about to begin as the "modern era," the era that gave birth to the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome that should serve as models for the means of innovation as the "ancient era," and the Christian-centered era in between as the "Middle Ages." This division is said to have become popular after the German scholar Christophus Cellarius (1638-1707) used it in his writings. It was created as an expression of the self-awareness of the European middle class in the process of their rise to power, placing importance on the ancient and modern eras while viewing the Middle Ages as a transitional era that needed to be overcome. However, because it was a convenient division that could be applied not only to world history but also to the history of each nation, it came to be used as a division of the history of all civilized nations, regardless of the underlying values.
