Year of Jubilee

Japanese: 聖年 - せいねん（英語表記）Year of Jubilee

This custom originated from the "Jubilee Year" found in Leviticus 25:10 and following. Jubilee means a trumpet made from a horn in Hebrew, and it comes from the fact that the 50th year after the completion of a seven-year period (7 x 7 years), which was an expansion of the principle of the "Sabbath year" that transferred the idea and practice of the Sabbath to the year, was announced by blowing a trumpet as a year of liberation and amnesty (great Sabbath year). Due to the association of the word Jubilee with the Latin word jubilum (meaning "cry for joy"), the custom of celebrating the 50th year of a joyous event as a year or day of joy later arose as the "golden jubilee."

旧約聖書《レビ記》25章10節以下に見られる〈ヨベルの年〉から出た習慣。ヨベルとはヘブライ語で角から作られたらっぱを意味し，安息日の思想と実践を年に移した〈安息の年〉の原理をさらに拡大した七週年(7×7年)が満了した翌年の50年目を，解放，恩赦の年(大安息年)としてらっぱの吹奏で告知したことに由来する。ヨベルの語とラテン語jubilum(〈喜びの叫び〉の意)との連想もあって，のちに慶事の50年目を喜びの年または日として祝う〈金祝golden jubilee〉の習慣が起こった。
